'Threshold’ began as a set of postcard-sized pieces, the ‘Firestone Series’with a limited palette of blues and golds. It follows several sketching and photographing trips to capture the trees, paths, sunlight and shadows in a much-loved area of woodland near Belper in Derbyshire. In ‘Threshold’, I aimed to capture some of the immediacy of the smaller felts, while giving the subject more room to breathe.
'Threshold’ develops my ongoing theme of thin places, with portals between the trees and in the main trunk, and a focus on the path, its course and timeworn surface. I’m enjoying allowing the materials to shine, while evolving an abstracted quality to my work.
