Meet The Gallery Director

Behind the scenes

Hopton Hall Gallery was conceived and established by Chris and Andi Harvey, owners and custodians of Hopton Hall. The gallery forms a natural extension of the Hall itself, which has been thoughtfully and gradually restored as both a private residence and a setting for the display of an eclectic and carefully curated art collection.

Since returning from America in 2019, Chris and Andi have developed longstanding relationships with local artists and makers, commissioning and acquiring numerous works that reflect their commitment to supporting regional creativity.

Ruth Matthews is among the artists who has worked closely with the couple since their return, producing paintings that sensitively depict the buildings and properties within their care. She has also been instrumental in the development of the annual Month of Art, an event that coincides with the July opening of the Halls walled garden renowned for its roses and bringing together art, heritage, and community engagement.

Ruth's appointment as Hopton Hall Gallery's Gallery Director
Ruth's latest appointment is as Gallery Director at Hopton Hall Gallery in Ashbourne.
With over two decades of professional experience, Ruth brings both artistic insight and curatorial leadership to her role. She is responsible for shaping the gallery's curatorial vision and strategic direction, championing regional artists while upholding the highest standards of artistic excellence. Her role encompasses artist representation, exhibition programming, and the delivery of engaging events and private views that foster meaningful connections between collectors, artists, and audiences.

Ruth works with both established and emerging realist painters and sculptors,
ensuring that each exhibition reflects the breadth and depth of the genre from still life and portraiture to landscape and figurative work. She is committed to creating an inspiring and carefully considered visitor experience, while supporting the continued growth and recognition of represented artists within the regional and national art scene.

A diverse career that celebrates the enduring connection between people and place
Ruth's career path has evolved alongside her life experiences. Ruth began her
professional journey in manufacturing as a fashion designer before relocating to
Australia, where she worked in municipal art galleries and later as a retail training
consultant. Upon returning to the UK, she achieved First Class Honours in
International Business and gained extensive experience within museums, galleries, and cultural organisations, supporting project delivery, evaluation, and audience engagement for institutions including the National Trust.

In 2015, she co-founded Purple and Grey, a regional art network dedicated to
mentoring and supporting emerging artists as they developed professional confidence and meaningful industry connections.

Ruth subsequently completed a Masters degree with Distinction in Public History and Heritage from the University of Derby, developing a particular interest in architectural storytelling and the ways in which people connect with place. She went on to work as a Heritage Consultant, advising on historic buildings and conservation matters.

Alongside her curatorial and heritage work, Ruth is an accomplished artist. Her
paintings explore the beauty, architecture, and heritage of British towns and
landscapes. Working primarily in acrylics and acrylic inks, she aims to capture a strong sense of place, atmosphere, and historical resonance within each piece. Her artistic practice is deeply informed by her background in heritage, design, and education. Ruth's diverse career spanning fine art, heritage consultancy, fashion design, training, and gallery management has shaped a professional outlook grounded in storytelling and a profound appreciation of place. Whether curating an exhibition, painting a historic townscape, or mentoring fellow artists, her work consistently celebrates the enduring connection between people, place, and the narratives that shape them.

Hopton Hall Gallery will be a place that can capitalise on all her experience and
networks, putting people first so that art can be created and enjoyed by everyone who
visits.
