Returning to art following retirement, Andrew draws on a lifelong connection with landscape and place.
He studied at art college in Bournemouth before continuing his studies in Hull in the early 1980s, and has since lived and worked in Derbyshire for more than four decades.
His practice is rooted in a close observation of the landscape around him. Often travelling by bicycle, Andrew explores the changing character of the countryside, capturing fleeting shifts in light, weather, colour and atmosphere. These observations extend beyond Derbyshire to landscapes further afield, reflecting his fascination with the constant transformation of the world around us.
Working predominantly in acrylic on repurposed canvases, including found and charity-shop prints, Andrew embraces the history and existing imagery of each surface, transforming it into something new. The resulting works are both contemporary and reflective, balancing, memory and a strong sense of place.
Much of his work is deliberately ambitious in scale, with paintings often measuring around one metre square. Alongside these larger pieces, he occasionally works on a smaller scale, using intimacy and detail to explore the landscape from a different perspective.
Across his practice, Andrew seeks to convey not simply what a landscape looks like, but the experience of being within it: its movement, atmosphere and ever-changing sense of place.
