Tony Hall British, b. 1963

Tony Hall is an artist whose practice is rooted in drawing and painting from life. Working across painting, drawing and printmaking, he responds to the world around him, often beginning with an urge rather than a preconceived idea. His immediate surroundings provide a constant source of material, and his work develops through close observation, directness and a willingness to work with whatever medium or method feels right at the time.

Tony Hall works from life and direct observation, looking for what ‘needs’ doing: this thing here; that person; the flowers on the windowsill; the light on that tree. In Avigdor Arikha’s words, all subjects are equal, but not at the same time. He moves between painting, drawing and printmaking.

Recently, Tony has been developing a growing body of paintings and prints centred on the park close to where he lives. He paints and draws people who agree to sit for him, and has an ongoing series of flower drawings made on his phone.
