When did you start your creative practice and why?
I studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central Saint Martins before beginning my career as a mural artist, creating artwork for theme parks, sports centres and private clients. Although I enjoyed mural painting, my focus shifted after we sadly lost our beloved dog. I painted her portrait as a way of remembering her, and that experience reminded me how powerful art can be in preserving the memory of a much-loved animal. From that moment, I decided to dedicate my work to animal portraiture, combining my passion for fine art with my lifelong love of animals.
How would you describe your artistic style to someone unfamiliar with your work?
My work combines realism with personality. Working in acrylics, I build layers of paint and glazes to create lifelike detail, capturing the character and presence of each animal. My paintings range from intimate portraits to compositions featuring groups of animals in their natural landscape settings. I also enjoy creating more imaginative pieces, depicting animals in whimsical scenes wearing clothing or accessories that reflect their unique personalities. Whether using vibrant colour or more subtle backgrounds, I aim to create paintings that celebrate the beauty, individuality and spirit of the animal world.
What themes or ideas do you find yourself returning to most often?
Animals are at the heart of everything I paint. Whether I'm painting a single animal or a group, I'm inspired by their individuality, their relationships and the stories they tell. My aim is to create paintings that capture not just a likeness, but a real sense of life and presence.
What tools, materials or techniques are essential to your practice?
I work primarily in acrylics, building up layers of paint and transparent glazes to achieve depth, texture and lifelike detail. My technique demands patience and meticulous attention to detail, often using fine brushes to capture the subtle textures of fur and the expression in an animal's eyes. This careful, layered process allows me to bring warmth, character and realism to every painting.
Have you got a project, award, residency or idea you are excited to share with us?
I was honoured to receive the Princess Michael of Kent Award at the Society of Women Artists exhibition and to be selected as a British Art Prize finalist on two occasions. My work has been exhibited and sold at prestigious venues including the Mall Galleries and the London Art Biennale. Alongside my exhibition work, I continue to create original animal paintings, as well as undertaking bespoke pet portrait commissions.
If your work could evoke one feeling or reaction in viewers, what would it be?
I hope my paintings encourage people to pause and appreciate the beauty, character and individuality of animals. Whether it's a beloved pet or wildlife, I want each painting to create a lasting connection with the viewer.
