When did you start your creative practice and why?
When I was twenty one I realised I wanted to do something I enjoyed rather than just earning a living.
How would you describe your artistic style to someone unfamiliar with your work?
I have two main styles, first is thick pure oil paint applied with palette knifes and painted
outdoors on location, the second style is more mixed media with very fluid paint and much looser and more imagination.
What themes or ideas do you find yourself returning to most often?
Landscape and Nature.
What do you find challenging as an artist, and how do you overcome these challenges?
Keeping the energy levels up which is why it’s important to paint what you love as that gives you the energy.
Who are the artists (past or present) who have strongly influenced you?
Constable, Turner, Auerbach, Tress, Rowlett.
How has your style or perspective evolved over time?
Oh yes that’s from more radical switches in the early days to more gentle evolution in later years.
What tools, materials, or techniques are essential to your practice? Is there a colour you just couldnot do without?
With the plein air painting I have a limited palette of warm and cold primary colours and I mix all my colours from them.
If you could give the younger you advice what would it be?
Learn to look and draw and paint from life, know the rules before rushing to break them, so many rush to be abstract or expressive when they haven’t even learnt to see what’s in front of them.
What is your website and how do we find you on social media?
I am on Facebook – Colin Halliday Art and on Instagram
