We've finally had our first glimpse of sunshine this year and that can only mean one thing: preparations for the annual Month of Art in July are well underway.
This year, we're shaking things up and taking a more ambitious approach to what we offer the public. We've invited a wide range of local and regional art groups to exhibit their work, as well as use the gardens as a base for dedicated plein air day trips.
Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the many talented art groups and societies across our region. We hope this inspires people not only to purchase artwork, but also to attend workshops, watch demonstrations, or even become members themselves.
Gallery Director Ruth Matthews has been part of many art groups over the years and shares how they have enriched her life as an artist:
"When I was in sixth form in Nottingham, I used to attend a watercolour group each Thursday night. Although I was the youngest there it really helped me concentrate on my skills and helped me to pass my A-level art. In 2003, I emigrated to Australia and joined the prestigious Albury and Wodonga Art Society and absolutely fell in love with the friendship and opportunities the group provided me. I joined the committee and became their marketing guru and we had some great success in getting coverage in national art magazines and the local papers. This was where my initial love of representing artists started.
Fast forward to returning to the UK. I formed Purple and Grey with artist Karina Goodman and we held art classes, networking events and a regular art group along with exhibitions. I was also asked to join Peak District Artisans in 2015 and I have never looked back. Being a committee member I have held several roles within the group and made many friendships and again been offered many opportunities.
As an artist I was fortunate enough to be invited to demonstrate at local and regional art groups (an often nerve wracking experience at first until you realise that the room is full of like minded artists and we all share a love of creativity and humour!).
Humour, friendship and creativity are the key take - aways from every art group I have been a part of or visited and it is my absolute pleasure to bring some of the region's best groups together in one place for the Month of Art 2026."
The Month of Art 2026 will take place throughout July, Thursday to Sunday. Take a look at our event page here.
