Art Organisations Groups and Societies to Play a Big Role in the Hopton Hall July Month of Art

Art News

This year at the Hopton Hall July Month of Art we have invited many regional art organisations, groups and societies to display their work and to take part in our celebration of all things art.

These art organisations, groups and societies play a vital role in strengthening local communities. They provide opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, share their creativity, and develop meaningful social connections. In an increasingly digital world, these organisations offer valuable face-to-face interaction that can help reduce isolation and build a sense of belonging.

They also help nurture creativity and personal development. Members have the opportunity to learn new skills, gain confidence, and receive constructive feedback from fellow artists. A group that does this well are Peak District Artisans established in 1991, Peak District Artisans are a prestigious association of professional artists, makers and artisans from the Peak District region, showcasing award-winning and internationally recognised talent through major exhibitions while supporting each other to produce excellence in contemporary art and craft. Meet them during the final weekend of the Month of Art.

Many studies have shown that creative activities can reduce stress, improve mental health, and increase overall happiness. Art groups provide a welcoming space where individuals can express themselves, relax, and focus on positive experiences. By encouraging creativity, fostering social connections, supporting wellbeing, and enriching local culture, art groups and societies make a significant and lasting contribution to the communities they serve.

One example of this is The Level Centre who are taking part in the Month of Art. Founded in 1988 by Peter Shelton as First Movement, a charity creating art projects for people with learning disabilities, the organisation grew significantly and in 2008 opened the award-winning, Arts Council England-funded Level Centre in Rowsley, expanding its mission to provide accessible and inclusive arts experiences.

The Derby Sketching Club have also been invited to show work during the Month of Art Founded in 1887 by six Derby artists seeking a shared space to create and improve their work, the Derby Sketching Club quickly grew into a prestigious organisation whose annual exhibitions became major social and cultural events in the town. The long histories of these groups can help preserve local heritage by their members recording landscapes, buildings, traditions, and community stories through artistic expression. This creates a valuable cultural record for future generations.

Whether someone is a beginner or an experienced painter, being part of a supportive artistic community can inspire growth and encourage lifelong learning. One of the most important benefits is their ability to bring communities together. Through exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, and community projects, local residents can engage with one another and celebrate shared interests. These activities encourage collaboration and foster a stronger community spirit, creating friendships that often extend beyond the art room. Our Month long celebration of art at Hopton Hall Gardens is the perfect place to come along and see these groups in action, view some of their work and possibly become a member of one of them!
