Steph Trethowan British

Steph Trethowan is a contemporary oil painter an artist whose practice investigates the intersections of memory, emotional experience and observation.

She develops layered compositions that explore the relationship between representation and abstraction, inviting viewers to engage with her chosen subject not as a literal record, but as a remembered or relatable experience.
Drawing inspiration from both her lived experience and inner world, Trethowan's work is characterised by an intuitive process of building, obscuring, and revealing. Expressive mark- making and a considered use of colour create paintings that balance structure with spontaneity.

At the heart of Trethowan's practice is an interest in atmosphere and the emotional resonance of the subject. Rather than documenting, for example, a specific location, the work seeks to evoke reflection and personal interpretation in the viewer.
Based in the United Kingdom, Trethowan continues to refine a distinctive visual language through an evolving studio practice. Her work is held in collections across the UK and Europe.
