Steph Trethowan British

Steph Trethowan is a contemporary oil painter an artist whose practice investigates the intersections of memory, emotional experience and observation.

Steph Trethowan’s work is influenced by Expressionism and Cubism, drawing particular inspiration from artists such as Vlaminck, Cézanne and Braque. The environments she paints are not literal representations of place, but psychological landscapes shaped by memory and personal experience. Through the use of ambiguous forms, they invite viewers to bring their own interpretations and emotional responses to the work.

Space is deliberately compressed to enhance the narrative quality of each composition, while both multiple and hierarchical perspectives are employed to create depth and meaning. Working primarily in oils, she embraces the rich texture of the medium, using a variety of tools to build expressive surfaces and dynamic visual effects.
