When did you start your creative practice and why?
After leaving art school I started painting portraits of people's houses. I became self employed and it took off from there.
How would you describe your artistic style to someone unfamiliar with your work?
Representational
What themes or ideas do you find yourself returning to most often?
Architecture, landscape and street scenes
What is your creative process from idea to finished piece is it always the same?
I try to start with direct observation from my subject, painting in situ or from sketches.
What do you find challenging as an artist, and how do you overcome these challenges?
Persistence pays off in the end, just keep going
How does your immediate environment or location play in your work?
I am always observing my surroundings and often see subjects when doing ordinary things.
Who are the artists (past or present) who have strongly influenced you?
John Singer Sargent amongst others
How has your style or perspective evolved over time?
I started out as an abstract painter and turned to representational art as I found it more rewarding
What tools, materials, or techniques are essential to your practice? Is there a colour you just couldn't do without?
Graphite tracing sheets for use with watercolour. I can transfer complicated drawings on to paper before I start painting
How do you balance artistic expression with practical concerns like income or marketing, social media?
One only has about 4-6 creative hours in a day to paint, I discipline my time for admin, painting etc so I am not chaotic
If you could give the younger you advice what would it be?
Watch what other artists do, learn from them. Keep evolving and don't decide too early what kind of an artist you are. Peserverance pays off in the end.
