When did you start your creative practice and why?

I had always been creative since leaving art college in 1973 and working as a graphic designer for over 30 years then eventually as an art teacher.

Is there a particular piece of yours that feels especially meaningful? Why?

I like to create pictures from my childhood memories when we had no camera as these images are still in my mind.

What do you find challenging as an artist, and how do you overcome these challenges?

My biggest challenge was teaching art to prisoners in a high security prison for ten years.

Do you ever have creative blocks, how do you keep motivated?

I rarely have time to have any creative blocks as running three art classes using several mediums each week keeps me motivated.

Who are the artists (past or present) who have strongly influenced you?

My favourite artist is Jan Vermeer but I find there are also some contemporary artists who I admire such as the ones doing hyper realism work.

If you could give the younger you advice what would it be?

Diversify your work and don't stick to work that doesn't challenge you.

Have you got a project / award/ residency/ or idea are you excited to share with us?

I took part in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year which was a great experience.

What is your website and how do we find you on social media?

My work can be found at www.alanfernihoughimages.com and my art classes can be found at: Ashbourne Art Class and Uttoxeter Art Class
