Martin Sloman

How would you describe your artistic style to someone unfamiliar with your work?
Watercolours using bold, vibrant, strong colours that people don’t always associate with this medium.

What themes or ideas do you find yourself returning to most often?
When people see my work for the first time, they soon realise that I enjoy painting a wide range of subjects. It could be anything from a night scene of Venice, to Amy Winehouse, Moto Gp, or even a beautiful Loch in Scotland.

What do you find challenging as an artist, and how do you overcome these challenges?
You’re always learning all the time, that’s the challenge, but it’s an enjoyable one.

Who are the artists (past or present) who have strongly influenced you?
Turner especially, but there are so many talented artists in Derbyshire producing
inspirational work.

How do you balance artistic expression with practical concerns like income or marketing, social media?
I don’t think you can totally. If you try solely to paint to sell, and it’s not a subject that inspires you, it won’t bring out the best in your work.

If you could give the younger you advice what would it be?
The page isn’t big enough. It’s very easy to say follow your dream, but the harsh reality of life is, you have to make money to live. I admire those who manage to combine the two from the start, it took me until later life to do so.

Have you got a project / award/ residency/ or idea are you excited to share with us?
I look  forward to taking part In The Month of Art at Hopton Hall in July.

If your work could evoke one feeling or reaction in viewers, what would it be?
A feeling of connection within between my work and themselves.
